What changed, in one paragraph
For years the number most Americans knew was 1-800-GAMBLER. On January 29, 2026 the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) announced a new number for its National Problem Gambling Helpline™: 1-800-MY-RESET, which dials 1-800-697-3738. The change followed a September 22, 2025 New Jersey court ruling that the 1-800-GAMBLER service mark belongs to the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, which created the line in 1983 and had licensed it to NCPG since June 2022. The licence ended May 31, 2025, and NCPG was ordered to stop using the mark by September 29, 2025. NCPG's older access number, 1-800-522-4700, still works and still reaches the same network.

Why you still see 1-800-GAMBLER everywhere
Two reasons, and neither is a mistake by the people printing it. First, many state responsible-gambling laws and regulations name 1-800-GAMBLER as the number operators must print in advertising, so sportsbooks in those states are required to keep using it until the rule changes. NCPG's own announcement says adoption of 1-800-MY-RESET "will vary by jurisdiction due to state-level regulatory requirements and policies." Second, the number still works — it reaches the New Jersey council's line, which connects callers to help. So both numbers are live and both lead somewhere real. The only thing that changed is which one is the National Problem Gambling Helpline™: that is 1-800-MY-RESET.
What happens when you call
The National Problem Gambling Helpline™ is a single point of access to 24 contact centers across the United States. Your call is routed by the area code you dial from, not by tracking your location, to the center that serves your state, where trained staff offer support and referrals to local treatment, self-exclusion programs, and peer support. It is free and confidential, available around the clock, and you can call, text, or chat. You do not have to be the person who gambles — family members and friends call too. The helpline is not a crisis line; for a crisis, call or text 988.
Helpline contacts by state, 2024 and 2025
These are the number of calls, texts, and chats to the National Problem Gambling Helpline™ from each state and the District of Columbia, as published by NCPG in its 2025 Helpline Annual Report (analysis by the Omni Institute). Because one publisher applied one method to every state, these figures are comparable across states — the only gambling-harm figures in the United States that are. Read the direction, not the magnitude: NCPG's report says call and text data were unavailable for October, November, and December 2025 after the court ruling, and instructs readers that the national decrease should not be read as a true decrease in help-seeking. The 51 rows sum to 394,155 contacts in 2024 and 363,588 in 2025; national totals (402,504 and 377,410) are higher because they include U.S. territories and contacts with no state recorded.

Why do sportsbook ads still say 1-800-GAMBLER?
Because many state advertising rules require that specific number. NCPG has asked states and regulators to authorize and promote 1-800-MY-RESET, and says adoption will vary by state.
