Sports Betting Self-Exclusion: How to Block the Apps
Self-exclusion takes the decision out of your hands in the moments you need it most. Here is how to use it to block the sportsbooks for good.
Willpower fails in the exact moment you need it most — a bad beat, a boring night, a big game. Self-exclusion is powerful because it removes the choice entirely. You decide once, while you are clear-headed, and the ban holds even when the urge returns.
What is self-exclusion?
Self-exclusion is a voluntary program that legally bars you from gambling platforms for a fixed period — commonly six months, one year, or five years, and sometimes for life. Licensed sportsbooks and casinos are required to honor it: your accounts are closed or frozen, and you are removed from marketing.
How to self-exclude
Option 1: Inside each app
Every legal sportsbook has a responsible-gaming section in its settings where you can self-exclude from that operator. It is quick, but it only covers that one app — you would need to repeat it everywhere you have an account.
Option 2: Statewide self-exclusion
Most US states with legal betting run a self-exclusion list through their gaming commission or lottery. Enrolling once can cover every operator licensed in your state at the same time, which is far more effective than going app by app. Search for your state's name plus gambling self-exclusion to find the official program.
Make it actually stick
- Combine self-exclusion with deleting the apps and blocking sites in Screen Time.
- Turn on your bank's gambling transaction block so funding is declined.
- Choose the longest period you are comfortable with — you can always renew, but you cannot easily reverse it early, which is the point.
- Tell someone you trust that you have done it, so you have accountability.
What self-exclusion will not do
Self-exclusion blocks access, but it does not treat the underlying urge. Think of it as buying yourself time and safety while you do the deeper work — building new routines, joining a community, and getting support. The block keeps you out; the recovery keeps you out for good.
Self-exclusion is a promise you make to yourself once, so you do not have to keep making it every single night.
