How to Stop Gambling on Your Phone
The casino used to be somewhere you had to drive to. Now it is in your pocket. Here is how to lock it down on your iPhone.
The reason mobile gambling is so hard to quit is simple: the casino is always open and always within arm's reach. The good news is that the same phone can be turned into a barrier instead of a doorway. Here is how to lock it down on iPhone.
Step 1: Delete every gambling app
Start clean. Remove all sportsbook, casino, poker, and prediction-market apps. Do not just move them to a back page — delete them entirely so reinstalling requires a deliberate, friction-filled decision.
Step 2: Block gambling sites with Screen Time
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on.
- Go to Content Restrictions, then Web Content, and choose Limit Adult Websites.
- Under Never Allow, add each sportsbook and casino URL you use.
- Set a Screen Time passcode and have someone you trust hold it — so you cannot quietly undo it.
That last step matters most. A block you can remove in ten seconds during a craving is not really a block. Handing the passcode to a partner or friend turns a moment of weakness into a conversation instead of a relapse.
Step 3: Turn on your bank's gambling block
Many banks and card issuers now offer a built-in gambling transaction block. Once enabled, attempts to fund a betting account are declined automatically. Some blocks even include a cooling-off delay before they can be switched off.
Step 4: Kill the triggers
- Unsubscribe from every sportsbook promo email and turn off push notifications.
- Mute or unfollow betting accounts, tipsters, and odds pages on social media.
- Remove saved payment methods from your browser and phone wallet.
- Avoid gambling-heavy content and group chats during the first weeks.
Step 5: Replace the reach-for-the-phone reflex
A huge part of phone gambling is the automatic habit of opening the app when you are bored or anxious. Put something else in that slot — a recovery app, a breathing exercise, a message to a friend, or a streak counter that shows how far you have come.
You are not trying to out-discipline a machine built to be irresistible. You are unplugging it.
